WETLANDS
International Organisations
on Wetlands
National Organisations on Wetlands
Generally, wetlands are lands where saturation with water is the
dominant factor determining the nature of soil development and the types of
plant and animal communities living in the soil and on its surface. Wetlands
vary widely because of regional and local differences in soils, topography,
climate, hydrology, water chemistry, vegetation, and other factors, including
human disturbance. Wetlands are found from the tundra to the tropics and on
every continent except Antarctica.
The term "wetlands" refers to a broad collection of
water-based ecosystems, but more than 50 definitions of wetlands are used
worldwide. Wetlands vary enormously in size and character: from tiny village
ponds to pools, oxbow lakes, bas-fonds, bogs, peatlands, mires, moors, paramos,
pocosins, vernal pools, playas, praire potholes, wet meadows, wet prairies,
fens, marshes, riparian forested wetlands, tundra wetlands, montane fen
meadows, tidal freshwater marshes, tidal salt marshes, mangrove swamps,
sundarbans, creeks, lagoons, estuaries, deltas, floodplains, mudplains, up to
rivers and lakes. A general definition could be: Wetlands are areas where water covers the soil, or is present either at
or near the surface of the soil all year or for varying periods of time during
the year, including during the growing season.
Remark: While searching for wetland-sites on the internet one is
inundated by North American sites on this theme. In this Newsletter only sites
of international importance are mentioned. In the Links Only section you will find
ample directories for North American sites on wetlands.
International Organisations on
Wetlands
Mission: The conservation and wise use of wetlands by national action
and international cooperation as a means to achieving sustainable development
throughout the world.
No review of wetlands sites without this
website. The main global information source on wetlands. The Convention on
Wetlands, signed in Ramsar (Iran) in 1971, is an intergovernmental treaty which
provides the framework for national action and international cooperation for
the conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources. There are
presently 130 contracting parties to the Convention, with 1108 wetland sites, designated
for inclusion in the Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance.
It is a very extensive site with a.o. the
Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance (in partnership with
Wetlands International), a Partnership section, information on items like World
Wetlands Day, the Ramsar Wetlands Award, Library, Photo Gallery and Links. The
site is in English, French and Spanish. The site has several powerful search
functions.

International Asia Pacific-Indonesia Programme
This is part of the global organisation
with its own website. Since 1986, Wetlands International has supported the
Indonesian Ministry of Forestry, Directorate General Protection and Nature
Conservation (PKA) in programmes of survey, conservation and management of
wetlands, biodiversity evaluation, ecological importance, habitat status and
conservation potential of a number of areas in Indonesia.
The Indonesia Programme of
Wetlands International possesses a library, with about 7000 titles of books and
articles and about 5000 slides, and a computerized Wetland Database which
contains information about 272 wetland sites throughout Indonesia.

The European Freshwater
Programme (EFP) was established in 1998 with the overall goal of "a Europe
where the functions and ecological integrity of freshwater ecosystems are
conserved and restored for the benefit of all life." This programme works
intensively with nearly 20 national and regional WWF offices in Europe, and
with outside partners such as NGOs, governments, businesses, research
institutions and water authorities.
A special
feature of this site is the WWF Water and
Wetland Index, a pan-European initiative assessing the state, pressures and
management of key freshwater ecosystems (rivers, lakes, wetlands) as well as
national policy action on freshwater issues of 16 European countries

IUCN Wetlands & Water
Resources Programme
The Wetlands & Water Resources
Programme aims to improve the conservation and sustainable use of freshwater
and tidal wetlands, so that these ecosystems meet the needs of human society
and make a greater contribution to the conservation of biological diversity.
The Programme works in over 30 countries worldwide.
Through this programme IUCN
members and partners are guided and assisted to find new ways for the
sustainable use of wetlands and water resources. The Programme advises on the
management and restoration of these ecosystems to achieve socio-economic
development while conserving biological diversity.
It contributes to wetland
and water policies development and implementation around the world. It manages
water resources and restores wetlands in field projects. It tries to increase
the understanding of the ecological, social and economic processes in wetland
conservation. It encourages and enables communities and institutions to improve
wetland management.

degradation of mangrove forest ecosystems worldwide. The central aim is to
promote the rights of local coastal peoples, including fishers and farmers, in
the sustainable management of coastal environments.
MAP provides four essential
services to grassroots associations and other proponents of mangrove
conservation: 1) It coordinates a unique international NGO network and
information clearinghouse on mangrove forests; 2) It promotes public awareness
of mangrove forest issues; 3) It develops technical and financial support for
NGO projects; and 4) MAP helps publicize within the developed nations the basic
needs and struggles of Third World coastal fishing and farming communities
affected by the consumer demands of the wealthy nations. (This is done through
the quarterly newsletter, bi-weekly news bulletins, action alerts, and
published articles, as well as planned public forums and presentations.)
