Antenna Networking for Progress and not for Profit!

 

Antenna functions already 15 years as a platform for (mainly) Dutch organisations who are active in the fields of development co-operation and emergency aid, environment, ecology and energy, and media, art and culture.

 

The Antenna site comes in Dutch language and English language versions. However the English version is less elaborated and developed than the Dutch version, moreover it tends to be quite slow in its updating.

 

Features: A news sections on the countries of Former Yugoslavia, East Timor, the Moluccas, Turkey and the Middle East, and the Horn of Africa, on the Kurds, and about gentechnology. A Member links section according to the following categories: Development co-operation and emergency aid; environment, ecology and energy; media, art and culture. The Antenna Index on internet sources about a.o. Development, Forests, Energy, Health, Native Nations, Agriculture, Human Rights, Environment, etc. Antenna also offers a forum environment where networks and platforms can give their information (i.e. Homeoweb, Fair Trade). Antenna hosts also several Dutch portals (e.g. MilieuNet, NatuurNet, Ecomarkt) and it takes care of the distribution of the newsgroups of the ANN (Ander Nieuws Netwerk = Different News Network).

ELDIS The gateway to development information

 

The Electronic Development and Environment Information System (ELDIS) is a free gateway to information sources on development and the environment. Besides offering an easy route to the latest information on development and environmental issues it provides an ever increasing number of descriptions and links to a variety of online information sources. The searchable database includes 10,000 key documents and organisations plus 100,000 selected web pages. Furthermore access to databases, library catalogues, bibliographies, and email discussion lists, research project information, map and newspaper collections.

This is the supersite of the OneWorld organisation which rapidly has become the main global gateway to information on human rights and sustainable development.

Centre for Science and Environment (CSE)

 

The Centre for Science and Environment was established in 1980. Since then it has grown into one of India’s leading environmental NGOs with a deep interest in sustainable natural resource management. CSE’s research and publication work is consistently combined with advocacy and network building.

 

CSE publishes newsletters, the fortnightly Down to Earth magazine, and annual publications. It provides information to the media through its feature service, press briefings, email bulletins, library and newsclipping services. All this is clearly arranged into databases with strong search-options. The BIC is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organization that provides information and strategic support to NGOs and social movements throughout the world on the projects, policies and practices of the World Bank and other Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs). It is devoted solely to monitoring the World Bank. 

The site provides an "activist's toolkit" with information about the Bank in great detail and a specific breakdown of what areas the Bank's annual loans are being distributed (oil and gas, agriculture, etc.). The site also lists what BIC sees as problem projects currently being funded. BIC advocates for greater transparency, accountability and citizen participation at the MDBs.

Independent Media Center

 

The IMC or Indymedia is a network of independent media organizations and hundreds of journalists offering grassroots, non-corporate coverage. “Indymedia is a democratic media outlet for the creation of radical, accurate, and passionate tellings of truth.”

The IMC was established by various independent and altarnative organizations in order to provide grassroots coverage of the WTO conference in Seattle. Since then through a decentralized and autonomous network, hundreds of media activists have setup independent media centers in London, Canada, Mexico City, Prague, Belgium, France, and Italy, with more to come.

Center for Environmental Journalism

 

The Center for Environmental Journalism (CEJ) was established in 1992 by the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Colorado at Boulder. The CEJ seeks to enrich public understanding of environmental issues by elevating the quality of media coverage. It offers a variety of programs that will help both journalists and future journalists enhance their knowledge and expertise. The programs focus on professional development, student education and communication with scientists and the public.

The Ted Scripps Fellowships give experienced journalists the opportunity to take classes, conduct in-depth research and reflect on critical questions. The CEJ presents occasional workshops and seminars. Topics range from environmental issues of regional importance to questions of ethics and methodology.

GreenNet

 

GreenNet is a not-profit collective dedicated to supporting and promoting groups and individuals working for peace, human rights and the environment, through the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

International Center for Journalists

 

The ICFJ was established in 1984 to improve the quality of journalism in nations where there is little or no tradition of independent journalism.

ICFJ's International Journalists' Network (IJNet) is an online source for the latest media assistance news from Central and Eastern Europe, Russia and the Newly Independent States as well as Latin America (in Spanish) and Africa. IJNet also provides both geographical and topical forums for journalists. Furthermore information about media assistance news, journalism training opportunities, reports on the state of the media around the world and valuable media directories.

Society of Environmental Journalists

An organization of journalists, for journalists. The SEJ was established in 1990 and it is the world's largest organization of journalists who cover the environment. It is the only U.S.- based membership organization of working journalists dedicated to improvements in environmental reporting. The mission of the Society of Environmental Journalists is to advance public understanding of environmental issues by improving the quality, accuracy, and visibility of environmental reporting. Towards that end, SEJ provides critical support to journalists of all media in their efforts to cover complex issues of the environment responsibly.

 

Activities: The SEJ offers educational programs and services for working journalists, educators, and students, including national and regional conferences. SEJ also acts to raise awareness among editors, news managers, publishers, etc. on the value and importance of environmental news reporting.

Trade and Environment Database

 

TED offers an excellent, comprehensive review of more than 350 trade disputes around the world involving environmental issues. Funded by American University, the EPA and the Japan and Korea foundations, among others, the database allows you to sort cases by country, industry, type of environmental problem or habitat. Each case study offers detailed background of the issues, the environmental concerns, legal concerns and outcome.
